A conversation with Greg, founder of Hestia Retreat, on what actually fills the hours inside the dark - and why "doing" might be the wrong question entirely.
Hestia Retreat - Interview
We broke bread with Greg - this time to ask what you actually do in there. Not the neurochemistry, not the ancient lineage, but the hours themselves. What fills them, what falls away, and why "doing" might be the wrong question entirely.
People ask me this before every retreat, and I understand why - it's the most natural question in the world. But the honest answer is that the Darkness itself is the teacher. You can't read, you can't watch anything, you can't scroll. None of the usual things that fill a day are available to you. And that absence isn't a problem to be solved. It's a liberation. It opens doorways that most people in our light-saturated lives never get close to.
Things arise on their own. Deep meditative states that would normally take years of practice to reach. Vivid dreams, and often lucid dreams, because the line between sleep and waking softens so much. The body finds its own rhythms of breath without anyone teaching it to. Visions and inner journeys appear without any external input at all. There's a stillness that lets deeper layers of you surface. Appetite tends to fall away too, so a kind of natural fasting happens almost by itself. Some people describe something close to a shamanic experience, with no substances and no ritual required. None of it is forced. It's what naturally emerges once the usual distractions simply aren't available to distract you anymore.
We do, for those who want them. Plenty of people are happy to let the Darkness lead entirely, and that's perfectly valid. But others find comfort in having some kind of map, even a loose one, especially the first time. So we offer personalised guidance across a handful of practice areas, depending on what someone is drawn to.
Lucid dreaming is one of the biggest draws. The extended REM cycles and the hypnagogic states that show up naturally in Darkness create about as good a training ground for conscious dreaming as you'll find anywhere. People learn to recognise they're dreaming while still inside the dream, and to use that awareness for healing, creativity, or insight. Then there's conscious breathing - breath becomes a very direct pathway to altered states in there, so we draw on things like rebirthing breathwork and the natural breathing patterns that emerge in deep stillness. We also work with Taoist internal arts - microcosmic orbit, standing meditation, that kind of internal energy cultivation, which suits the stillness of Darkness almost perfectly. Shamanic journeying is another - Darkness opens many of the same doorways shamans have used for millennia, without needing any substances to get there. And then conscious fasting and shamanic dieta principles, for those whose appetite naturally falls away and want to work with that consciously rather than just let it happen.
It starts before you ever arrive. We offer a dedicated consultation, ninety minutes, where we assess your experience and what you're drawn to, and design a personalised approach for your retreat. Out of that you get a customised preparation guide, a reading list suited to your interests, and a practice framework shaped around however many days you're staying. Then after the retreat there's a follow-up session to help you process what came up in whichever area you focused on, and ongoing guidance to help you integrate it. The fee for that consultation is applied toward the cost of your retreat if you go on to book.
Honestly, yes. The fuller video tutorial bundles for each of those areas are still in development. What's available right now is the personalised, one-to-one route through the consultation, and that's deliberate - I'd rather build those programmes properly than rush something generic out. The lucid dreaming work is furthest along and will likely be the first formal package to launch.
That's exactly the tension, and it's worth naming directly. The practices we offer are doorways, not destinations. The most profound experiences in there often have nothing to do with any technique at all. They come from simply being willing to sit with whatever emerges once everything else has fallen away. So if someone arrives gripping tightly to a method, we'll gently loosen that grip during the retreat itself. In Darkness, you discover you already contain everything you came looking for.
I'd say that's exactly what the consultation is for. Everybody's path through the Darkness is different. Whether you're pulled toward the old Taoist techniques, shamanic journeying, breathwork, or lucid dreaming - or toward none of them at all, and you'd simply rather see what arises unguided - personalised guidance just makes sure your retreat serves whatever it is you actually came for, rather than what you assumed you'd need beforehand.
You stop doing, and you start being. That's where the work actually happens.
